obsessive-compulsive disorder

If you have OCD, or know someone who has, you'll know all about it. It usually emerges at a point in life when people are under extra stress. Put anyone under enough stress and they'll develop some sort of problem, mental and/or physical. As with all stress-based disorders, human givens therapy is highly effective, and OCD generally succumbs quite quickly to guided imagery which changes the expectations generated by the obsessive thoughts. It is usually relatively straightforward to dismantle the magical thinking that OCD creates - "if I just touch the dishwasher 55 times I'll be able to get to sleep" - and replace it with more realistic thought patterns. At the same time, the patient is taught to calm herself / himself down and an audit of his/her emotional state is taken, so that unmet needs can be addressed. When people meet their emotional needs properly, their stress levels fall below the point at which ritual thinking and behaviour might surface.
